Visiting China: tips for travelers

China is a very popular destination for visitors but it is not the easiest to visit. A huge country with a massive population and a language that is difficult to learn it can be a challenge for the visitor. However these obstacles are not insurmountable if you follow the tips below.

Probably the biggest challenge that you are going to face when visiting China is the language barrier. Despite the fact that there are lots of Chinese people studying English the fact is they only represent a very small percentage of the population, the vast majority will not speak the language. Therefore an important tip is to make sure that you have a way to communicate. It is a good idea to make an effort to learn some basic phrases before you go. You will also want to bring a phrase book with you. One other option is to download an app on your phone that will translate for you. This will make your trip go a lot smoother.

The next thing to keep in mind about China is that it is really big. The idea that you are going to see the whole country is unrealistic, that would take months at a minimum. Instead you will find that the best option is to choose a particular area of the country that you want to visit and focus on that region. This will not only save you a lot of time traveling within China but it will also allow you to get to know that region much more in depth. This is usually preferable to skimming through a wide variety of areas.

When you are traveling make sure that you have your destination written down for you by somebody who speaks the language. This is especially important when you are in a big city. Addresses in China can be hard to understand so you will likely have a hard time explaining where you want to go if you need directions. Have the hotel write their address down for you and carry that with you so that you can show it to people if you need directions back. Also when you set out for a destination ask the staff at the hotel to write it down so that you can show the taxi driver, this will be much easier than trying to explain it verbally.

Not only is China a very large country it also has some real extremes in terms of weather. Therefore you have to make sure that you are prepared for whatever may happen. Make sure that you pack clothes that would be appropriate for all weather conditions, particularly for the time of year that you are traveling. Also make sure that you check the weather before you head out. This will save you from getting caught without the proper clothing.
